Prof Rob Nolan

Behavioural and Clinical Psychologist

Prof Rob Nolan is a clinical psychologist, who understands real life and the need for happiness and quality of life as the key to unlocking health.

Prof Nolan is Director of Cardiac eHealth at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, University Health Network, and a Clinical Psychologist and Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute. His affiliations include Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto, and Adjunct Professor in Psychology at York University.

His research focuses on evidence-based e-counseling to promote heart health and quality of life among individuals with high blood pressure or heart failure. This program uses Internet-based self-help services to bridge the gap between hospital-based clinics and home-based health promotion. The second area of his research uses cognitive skills training with heart rate variability biofeedback to evoke therapeutic change in heart rate and blood pressure among persons with high blood pressure.

Prof Nolan served as a founding advisory board member and contributor to the “Guide your patients to a smoke-free future” program, which was endorsed by the Canadian Medical Association and Inter-American Heart Foundation. He co-presented the first national workshop training series offered by the Canadian Register for Health Service Providers in Psychology, which dealt with lifestyle and motivational counseling for the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

Prof Nolan was appointed by the Minister of Health to the Women’s Health Council for Ontario, where he served on the executive until 2002. In 2004, Prof Nolan established the Behavioural Cardiology Research Unit at the UHN, which has expanded to the Cardiac eHealth. Among his current activities, Prof Nolan is Principal Investigator for 2 multicentre clinical trials that are helping to establish a pan-Canadian e-counseling platform for persons with cardiovascular conditions.
